No one is willing to burn the body of a person who has died from a corona infection. The locals obstruct the burial.
POKHARA: A 58-year-old man infected with corona died at the isolation ward of the Western Regional Hospital on June 8. Neither the driver of the hearse nor the burial ground is available. The Pokhara Metropolitan City has dug a ditch to bury the body at Rittaghat on the banks of Seti River in Ward No. 11.
However, the locals of Phulbari of Ward No. 11 and Bhalam of Ward No. 20 insisted on not burying the bodies at the ghat. The state MPs and ward chairpersons join the locals' procession. The corpse does not rise for 18 hours. Eventually the locals throw stones, the police charge with batons. After taking some locals under control, the corpse is managed.
Incident 2
A 55-year-old man from Syangja died of corona infection in the ICU of the Western Regional Hospital on Wednesday night. The metropolis decides to manage his body at Satpatre Ghat of Pokhara-32 Mazhuwa on the border of Kaski and Tanahu. When the locals find out that an excavator is digging a ditch at the wharf, they obstruct it. They stop the army and police from carrying the bodies in the hearse.
They burn tires on the way to the ferry. Clashes break out between locals and police. There are some minor injuries on both sides. The corpses are managed at the designated place after the police forcibly remove the obstruction. The enraged crowd arrives at the temporary police checkpoint along the Prithvi Highway. He hurled stones at the Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force. Police fired eight rounds in the air to control the situation. 8 people are arrested.
Why is it difficult?
Gandaki Pradesh has prepared a guideline for the management of corpses infected with corona. The guideline states that the management of corpses will be done by the army and police and the management of the wharf will be done by the local level. According to religion and rites, corpses can be buried or cremated. There is no compulsion to bury or burn. There is a provision to manage the place according to its practical suitability.
Two people have died of corona infection in Gandaki state till Thursday. Both died at a hospital in Pokhara. In that case, the responsibility of finding the ferry falls on the part of the metropolis. Both times the metropolis had to deal with a lot of stress while managing the corpses.
There is an electric crematorium at Shantighat on the banks of Seti river with the investment of the metropolis. The crematorium is not entirely electric. Firewood should also be used. Since the corpse is completely burnt at once, firewood should be mixed from time to time. Man Bahadur GC, chief of the metropolis, says that there is a problem that no one is ready to cremate the body. He said that there was a shortage of people to burn the bodies on firewood. He has objected to the locals obstructing the burial of bodies on state land. 'The corpse should be burnt completely. People are needed for that, 'he said,' who will burn if they start burning? The locals obstruct the burial. What a mess! '
He said that Satpatre Ghat of Ward No. 32 has been chosen to bury the bodies of those who died due to corona infection. According to him, the ghat is considered as the most suitable place as it is far from the settlement. He said that the state and the metropolis have shown interest in developing the place as a historical park. He informed that a tender of Rs. 270 million has already been issued for the construction of three automatic electric crematoriums in the metropolis.
Locals obstructing the management of the corpses have argued that corona infection spreads when corpses are buried in their area. Chief of Kaski Health Office Baburam Acharya says that the locals' understanding is wrong. He said that corona infection was seen in some of the people who went to Malami but it was due to other reasons. "Corona is transmitted from living people, the chances of moving from corpses are very low," he said.
He said that the locals' understanding of the corpse was even more wrong as they had to endure discrimination since the corona infection. "Even among the educated class, attitudes towards corona infection do not seem to be positive," he said.
