Tensions over Nepal-India border: Disputes do not bode well for both countries
Relations between Nepal and India have soured due to border disputes. The controversy erupted on November 2 when India included Kalapani, Lipulek and Limpiyadhura in its political map.
Nepal had objected to the construction of a trade route between India and China in 2017. While Nepal had expressed its disagreement with India and China, India had unilaterally built a road in the area, and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the road from New Delhi via video conference.
Despite Nepal's insistence on diplomatic talks on the border dispute, India continued to ignore Nepal's assertion and gave priority to road construction, inauguration and construction of physical infrastructure with the intention of occupying the strategically important territory for its own sake. The recently released map of Nepal also includes the territories that had disappeared from the map of Nepal for decades and which India had been occupying.
