Nawaraj BK of Jajarkot-Bheri Municipality-4, Ranagaun had a dream while walking from his house around noon on Saturday to bring his girlfriend home as a bride and go to work for the police after opening the lumber. But his dream vanished in about 6 hours.
The villagers chased 18 people, including Malla Tharki, who had gone to sleep at Rukum West Chaurjahari-8 across the Bheri River to pick up his girlfriend. Five people, including Nawaraj, lost their lives and one went missing. Twelve barely survived. Police have arrested 18 people, including a 17-year-old girl, after the incident. Two persons named in the complaint are absconding.
The dream of becoming a policeman
Nawaraj, 20, is the only son of Munilal and Urmila. He was preparing for the oral examination by getting his name in writing for the Nepal Police personnel. He was staying at home after the exam was postponed due to lockdown.
He studied up to class 12 from Tribhuvan University, Khalanga and wanted to make his parents happy by getting a job in the police. He was planning to marry Jagir and bring in a bride. "I used to say I would get a job and bring my daughter-in-law," said mother Urmila.
Munilal and Urmila work daily. They paid for the education of their son. Father Munilal said that he may have targeted the daughter of the upper caste as his son was a bitch.
Ganesh was preparing to go abroad
Ganesh Budha, who passed SEE in 2074 BS from Tribhuvan Higher Secondary School, Khalanga, was born in a lower class family. Although he was born in Talegaon, Kushe Gaonpalika-2, he lived with his parents in Ranagaun for a decade and a half. Father Padma Bahadur and mother Radhika work in the district headquarters.
Ganesh, 19, had dreamed of going abroad for employment and raising the family's financial status. "I used to go abroad to earn money, I would give you happiness," said Radhika. She said that Ganesh went to sleep that day as Nawaraj was a good friend.
Sandeep was getting ready to get married
Sandeep Vik (Sanju), 23, is not only a friend of Nawaraj, but also a relative. He is the eldest son of father Bal Bahadur and mother Savita. He is survived by a brother and two sisters. He studied only up to primary level and helped his parents with household chores. According to Savita, Sandeep was very straightforward and friendly.
I don't know if he ever got into a fight with anyone," she said. "How did he get into a fight with people from another village that day?" Sandeep was getting ready to get married soon. He used to say to his parents, 'I will help you at work by getting married.'
Lokendra in the mood to start gold and silver business
Lokendra Sunar, 18, had studied up to class 10 at Sheetal Secondary School, Chaurjahari Rukum. He is from Bheri Municipality-11, Matela. Her father died in a bus accident in 2074 BS. Now he has only one mother and one brother. My brother is also out for foreign employment. Only mother is at home.
He was preparing to run a gold and silver business. For this, he was undergoing training at Bhimmani Gold and Silver Shop in Surkhet. "I came home on a holiday in Lakdaun. It was written to die," said Laxmi, Lokendra's mother.
Tikaram plans to do solar business
Tikaram Sunar, 20, of Lamichhane village in Chaurjahari Municipality-1 of Rukum West is the only child of Sobe and Geeta. He is married with a 2-year-old daughter and a wife.
His parents work for him. Tikaram, on the other hand, had been working on solar power connection while studying in class 11 at Sheetal High School in Chaurjahari. After gaining good experience, he planned to expand his solar business as a business. "He went with his friend, the sinner killed him and threw him in the river," said his father Sobe. "He made his granddaughter an orphan and asked her to marry him." Sobe said that the pain of losing an only child is like seeing the separation of granddaughter and daughter-in-law.
Govinda was preparing for SEE
Govinda Shahi of Bheri Municipality-11, Matela has not been found yet. He is a student of Sheetal Higher Secondary School, Chaurajahari, giving SEE this year. He is the youngest of three children.
According to her mother Bhima Kumari, 18-year-old Govinda wanted to go abroad for employment by giving SEE. Poverty at home was the plan to go abroad to earn money. Bhimakumari said that she walked out of the house that day stubbornly. "I felt cold when my son, who never stays out of the house, did not come till evening," she said. Govinda is being sought by locals and a diving team of the Armed Police Force.
Postmortem report says death from beating
A post-mortem report has revealed that water was not found in the stomachs of five bodies found after the incident that took place when a group of youths from Bheri Municipality-4, Jajarkot reached Soti in Chaurjahari Municipality-8 of Rukum to pick up the girl. According to the doctor, he died after being beaten at the postmortem at Jajarkot Hospital. A doctor involved in the post-mortem said that all the deceased had injuries on their head, face and limbs.
"The head, arms, legs, chest and back were hit hard," the doctor said. "Even though the river flowed, there was no water in the stomach." He said that there was less water flowing in the river due to lack of water in the stomach. "Even though the body was found in Bheri, the deceased must have been drinking water. The incident has become more complicated and suspicious as there is no water in the stomach," he said. The hospital has sent a sample taken from the body of the deceased to a forensic science laboratory in Kathmandu for visa test.
Investigation committee started
A high-level investigation committee formed by the Home Ministry into the incident in Soti on Saturday has started work on Friday. A team led by Joint Secretary Jitendra Basnet had seen the body of Sandeep Vik on Friday. The team also met and questioned the family members.
Chief District Officer of Jajarkot Janak Raj Pant informed that the team would reach the spot and conduct further investigation. The Home Ministry has assigned a committee headed by Joint Secretary Basnet to SSP Janak Bhattarai of Nepal Police, Joint Director of National Investigation Department Om Bahadur Khadka, Deputy Secretary Vashisht Ghimire and Deputy Secretary Madhav Dhakal.
Local Dalit rights activists have handed over a six-point memorandum to the investigation committee in Jajarkot demanding an impartial investigation. Earlier, members of the Karnali Provincial Assembly Rato Kami, Jhupa Vik, Sita Nepali and others had called on the team members to reach Jajarkot and demand an impartial investigation into the incident and action against the culprits. Basnet, the coordinator of the committee, had made it clear that the investigation would be conducted impartially as per the mandate given by the government. "The incident will not be disrupted. You can rest assured," he said. "The truth will come out."
'Attempt to evade convict'
The victim's family has alleged that there was an attempt to sabotage the incident. He said that some locals and people's representatives in Rukum tried to evade the culprit by sabotaging the incident. "Ward chairman Dambar Bahadur Malla is the main culprit in the incident. It is all due to his involvement," said Munilal, Nawaraj's father. "But now the leaders are making statements to save the culprit." He claimed that the boys had tried to save the culprit by spreading rumors that he had been beaten and thrown into the river.
Meanwhile, Rukum West House of Representatives member Janardan Sharma and CPN-Rukum West District Committee have issued separate statements demanding strict action against the culprits. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Sharma recalled that he had always fought for the oppressed people and expressed his commitment to investigate the incident impartially and take stern action against the culprits. CPN-Rukum West has stated that it will assist in the process of impartial investigation of the incident and action against the culprits.
