Today is the 13th Republic Day. Republic Day is being celebrated with various programs across the country.
From the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly in 2065 BS, the Federal Democratic Republic was declared on this day, i.e. on May 30. It has entered its 13th year after completing 12 years from today.
Various programs are being held across the country on this occasion. The Jana Andolan (People's Movement) of 2062 BS ended the centuries-old monarchy and established a republic in the country.
The same movement brought the armed Maoists into the mainstream of peaceful politics.
The Constituent Assembly election held in Chait 2064 BS and the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly held after that had declared the country a federal democratic republic.
With this announcement, King Gyanendra Shah, the last heir to the monarchy, took leave of Narayanhiti.
However, the first Constituent Assembly led the country to a federal republic but the constitution could not be drafted and the second Constituent Assembly was elected in 2072 BS. The constitution drafted by the second Constituent Assembly is now being implemented.
The country's political transition period is over after the three-tier election held during the implementation of the constitution. With the formation of a stable government, the country is now moving towards economic prosperity.
Although the political changes in the country have been institutionalized since the establishment of the republic, the progress has not been as expected in terms of livelihood. New challenges have been added. Despite the change in the political system, there is no change in the thinking and style of the leaders of the political parties.
With a two-thirds majority, the current CPN (Maoist) is on the verge of collapse. The country is mired in corruption and irregularities. By influencing those in power, the current situation of the class that is wreaking havoc in the state coffers has increased.
There is growing frustration among the people. This time around, the Corona epidemic has left the country and its people in dire straits. While the old thinking and stalemate in the bureaucracy and political leadership persists, the people who want real change are beginning to feel frustrated.
