10 thousand entered from the border in 2 days

Most of those who returned from India have been admitted without trial. On top of that, the risk of infection spreading across the country is high due to poor management and inconsistency of quarantine.

Ten and a half thousand Nepalis have entered the country in two days without the necessary check and examination from the Indian border. The risk of spreading corona virus (Covid-19) infection has increased due to lack of activism to keep all the entrants in quarantine.

According to the data received by Kantipur from security sources, 35,093 people have entered Nepal through various checkpoints on April 25 alone. Last Thursday and Friday alone, 10,436 people have entered the country from 19 border districts. Adding the number of security guards who have been tricked into entering, this number is even higher. However, most of them have gone straight to their home districts without any health check-up and quarantine. Even though some local levels have brought the citizens from the border districts on their own initiative, it has not been possible to keep them in quarantine and get their health tested.
Examining the details of the last one week, it has been found that on an average, more than 4,000 people enter Nepal through various district checkpoints every day. This number seems to have doubled each day. According to an armed policeman stationed at the Kapilvastu border checkpoint, the number of people arriving at the checkpoint is doubling every day. A total of 2,609 people have infiltrated Nepal on May 20 under the coordination of the government. Similarly, 6,082 people were recruited in coordination and 39 people were secretly recruited in May 21. On the 9th and 10th, this number had reached around 10,000.

Due to the lack of effective coordination, the number of people entering through secret border checkpoints at risk is also significant. Looking at the number of people who sneak in and reach their villages directly not only reflects poor management at the border but also explains how the state is increasing the risk of infection. According to the Crisis Management Center (CCMC), 330 people entered Nepal secretly in April and 72 in May. However, security personnel stationed in the border area say that there are hundreds of smugglers. The data collected by the center is only the number in the police record.
There is also a tendency to enter Nepal at night by crossing rivers, forests, farms and paying money to bordering Indians. However, those who enter the country illegally in the name of entering the country are making risky journeys. On June 20, five people came to Mahakali from Swarad area of Baitadi after swimming. The next day, 14 people from the same area swam home.
There seems to be no systematic initiative to quarantine those who have invaded Nepal in groups from Indian cities at high risk of infection in the border districts or their home districts. A bus entering Kathmandu from Kanchanpur on Friday alone was checked by the police in Nagdhunga and it was found that 29 passengers were from India. According to police sources, five of them have been quarantined and the rest have been sent to the local level. There were 15 passengers from Ramechhap, 5/5 from Sindhupalchowk and Kavre in the bus. A policeman posted in Nagdhunga complained, “How many weeks have they been sitting at the border checkpoints and entering Nepal? Where can I go even if I stop and lie? The above says stop. But I don't know where to send them. '

The number of Nepalis gathering at the border has increased in recent days after India started operating trains. According to home sources, 1,531 people are stranded across the border in 13 bordering districts on Saturday alone. Apart from the information collected by the security sources, 896 Nepalis are stranded in Dashagaja area across Kapilvastu, 650 in Kanchanpur and 35 in Jhulaghat Naka across Baitadipa. More than 3,000 Nepalis, with or without details, are waiting at the border to return home.
According to the Far-Western Provincial Police, it is estimated that more than one lakh Nepalis have entered the country through various checkpoints in the first week of April alone. Neither the state government nor the federal government has the data on how many of those admitted are in quarantine and how many are not. On Friday alone, 500 people had entered from Mahendranagar and 300 from Jhulaghat. According to the police, an average of 3,000 Nepalis have entered the country from various checkpoints in the far west alone in the last three days.

Some border districts have said that the entry can be taken away by the concerned district or local level in coordination. But when all the districts or local levels do not coordinate the work of bringing people in their area safely and keeping them in quarantine, many people from India have gone to the district on their own initiative. Far-Western Police DIG Uttamraj Subedi said that there was a risk of the infection spreading if the people from India were not quarantined and allowed to return to the village without testing.
According to Rabindra Dhanuk, DIG of State 5 Police, the number of Nepalis gathering at the border is increasing every day. He estimated that around 6,000 Nepalis may have entered on Saturday alone. Although the number of people entering Nepal in large numbers is increasing day by day, the quarantine capacity in the country does not seem to have expanded accordingly. The state government and the Karnali state government have estimated that about 20,000 Nepalis will enter the country through their state in the next few days.
The state government estimates that about 80,000 to 100,000 people can enter through the border districts of the far-western states. According to the details collected by Kantipur from the security agencies of the border provinces, more than one lakh Nepalis will be able to enter Nepal from the border areas in the next one week. However, according to the Ministry of Health, there are only around 76,000 quarantine beds in the country. In which about 28 thousand are living now. 48,000 quarantine beds are not enough these days. Even now, the quarantines do not meet the standards and those from India do not seem to be able to stay in the quarantine due to poor management and crowds.
